Joshua Tree is one of those trips that people plan for months and remember for years. But get the logistics wrong — wrong packing, wrong timing, no plan — and it’s a slog. Here’s everything your group needs to arrive prepared.
Getting to Joshua Tree
Most guests fly into Palm Springs International Airport (PSP), roughly 45 minutes from the park’s south entrance. If you’re driving from Los Angeles, allow 2.5–3 hours depending on traffic. San Diego is a similar distance. Rent a vehicle — or better, a van for the group — since you’ll want the flexibility to move between trailheads, restaurants, and your villa without coordinating Ubers.
Stock up in Yucca Valley on the way in. It has the last proper supermarket, a Stater Bros, plus a Target. Don’t expect to do significant grocery shopping in Joshua Tree town itself.
What to Pack
- Sun protection — SPF 50+, a wide-brim hat, and UV-protective layers. The desert sun is relentless.
- Water — more than you think. A litre per hour of hiking is a real number here.
- Layers for night — even in summer, desert nights drop significantly. A fleece and a light jacket.
- Closed-toe shoes — trail runners or hiking boots for the park, flip-flops for the pool.
- Headlamp — for stargazing without ruining your night vision.
- Pickleball clothes — your villa has the courts. Come ready.
