The Best Time of Year to Visit Joshua Tree (And What to Do Each Season)

One of the most common questions we get at Meridian Collection is: “When should we come?” The honest answer is that Joshua Tree rewards visitors in every season — but the experience changes dramatically depending on when you arrive. Here’s your seasonal guide.

Spring (March – May): The Sweet Spot

Spring is peak Joshua Tree season, and for good reason. Temperatures sit between 70–85°F during the day, wildflowers carpet the desert floor after winter rains, and the light is exceptional. If you’re planning a group trip and flexibility exists, aim for March or early April before the crowds build through Easter weekend. The pool at your villa is perfect — warm enough to use, cool enough to jump into with genuine enthusiasm.

Summer (June – August): Hot, Bold, Unforgettable

The desert in summer is no joke — daytime highs regularly top 100°F — but your private pool makes it workable. The rhythm shifts: mornings in the park before 10am, afternoons poolside, evenings back out as the sun drops and the temperature falls 30 degrees. Summer is also the clearest time of year for stargazing, and Joshua Tree’s dark skies in August are extraordinary. Fewer visitors, lower rates, and a desert experience most people never have.

Autumn (September – November): Hidden Gem Season

September is summer’s gentler cousin — still warm, still sunny, but edges softened. By October the park has a quiet grandeur. Hiking is excellent, evenings call for a fire pit, and the boulders glow amber in the afternoon. Halloween weekend in the desert has become something of a cult event among regular visitors.

Winter (December – February): Cool, Crisp, and Underrated

Winter days in Joshua Tree run 55–65°F — sweater weather, not cold. The park is quieter, the light lower and longer, and there’s occasionally snow on the mountain ranges in the distance. The villas are warm, the skies enormous, and you’ll feel like you have the whole desert to yourselves.
